Quebec Association for People with Aphasia (AQPA): Accompaniment-friendship visits

Volunteer Position Description The “Association québécoise des personnes aphasiques ” (AQPA) is looking for volunteers to provide friendly visits to people with aphasia in French and English. The AQPA is a Community Organization whose primary goal is to help people with aphasia overcome social isolation. Aphasia is a language disorder commonly caused by a stroke, head trauma or a tumor. It can cause communication difficulties in daily activities and thus prevent them from enjoying life fully. The friendly visits are usually offered on a weekly basis, at the home of the person with aphasia. Depending on the need of the person with aphasia, the visits could revolve around language stimulating activities, stimulating activities, going to outings together.

Volunteer Position Requirements We are looking for trustworthy volunteers who are good with people and communication. Interest in and sensitivity to people with language difficulaties and handicaps in general are appreciated. While speaking French is not necessary for friendly visits accomplished in English, there might be less choice and opportunities while only working in English.
